I Just Discovered the Secret to Clean Live Worship Vocals (And I'm Mad I Didn't Think of It First)
Mar 31, 2026I saw Luke Hendrickson post something on Instagram the other day, and I literally got angry. Not at him — at myself. Because he shared something so simple, so obvious in hindsight, that I couldn't believe I'd been mixing live worship vocals the hard way for this long.
He posted: "I've been using Logic's Stem Splitter to clean up my live recorded worship vocals."
And I thought: Why didn't I think of that?
The Problem Every Live Worship Mixer Knows
If you've ever recorded vocals in a live setting, you know the struggle. The microphone picks up everything. Drums bleeding through. Cymbals crashing. Other singers. Room noise. Background instruments. It's all there, mixed right into your lead vocal.
Traditionally, you'd reach for plugins like Waves Clarity or iZotope Clear. They work, but they cost money. And if you already own your DAW, you're paying extra for something that might already be built in.
I've been doing this for years. Mixing, EQing, compressing — trying to manage all that bleed. And the whole time, Logic had a tool sitting right there.
What Logic's Stem Splitter Actually Does
Here's the magic: Logic can listen to your vocal recording and separate it into individual stems — vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, and "other."
So when you run a live vocal through it, it isolates the vocal and pulls out everything else. The drums disappear. The cymbals vanish. The background singers fade away.
I tested it on two different live worship recordings. The results were honestly shocking.
On the first vocal: The stem splitter cleaned it up so well that I would literally just export it as-is. No artifacts. No weird processing. Just a clean vocal.
On the second vocal: There was more bleed — more drums, more room noise. The splitter still did an incredible job, though it wasn't quite as pristine. But even then, I could blend in some of the "other" stems if I wanted to keep a little of that natural room tone.
The Workflow
It's stupidly simple:
- Right-click on your vocal track
- Go to Processing → Stem Splitter
- Choose Vocals and Instrumental (or go all-in and separate everything)
- Hit apply
- Wait a few seconds
- Export your clean vocal
That's it. You now have a vocal track with 90% of the bleed removed.
The Honest Comparison
I also tested Studio One's stem separator (since that's my main DAW). It works, but it doesn't compare. Logic's version is cleaner, more accurate, and produces fewer artifacts. If you're a Studio One user like me, you might want to find a friend with Logic and send them your files. It's worth it.
Why This Changes Everything for Me
I mix live worship recordings. That's my bread and butter. And I usually end up running heavy CPU plugins to manage bleed — which means rendering, bouncing, managing sessions. It's a workflow killer.
If Logic's stem splitter can eliminate that step? I'm using it on every vocal that has bad bleed from here on out.
Yes, it means I have to own Logic. Yes, it's an extra step. But if it saves me from rendering sessions and gives me cleaner vocals? That's a win.
A Shout-Out to Luke Hendrickson
I want to give credit where it's due. Luke posted this on his Instagram story — not even a full video, just a casual mention. And it completely changed how I'm going to approach vocal cleanup.
Luke is one of the best live worship mixers in the world. He works with Bethel. He knows what he's doing. And the fact that he's sharing these kinds of tips, even casually, is gold.
Want to see this in action? I break down the entire process in the full video — showing you exactly how to use Logic's stem splitter, comparing it to Studio One, and demonstrating the results on real live worship vocals.
And if you're mixing live vocals and struggling with bleed, grab the free mixing cheatsheet in the video description. It'll give you EQ and compression starting points while you're cleaning up your tracks.
See you in the video. I love you, friend. 🙏
